THE SOIL
It starts as we did... From the dust of the ground.
In recent years, the farm-to-table movement has gained significant traction as consumers seek non toxic, fresh, nutrient dense food options. At the heart of this movement is grass-fed beef, which offers not only a healthier alternative to conventional beef but also a deeper connection to the food we consume and the land that nourishes those cattle. As a direct seller of farm-raised grass-fed beef, we're excited to share the journey of our return to proper land husbandry.
The big picture is this: what your food consumes matters. The quality and variety of the food source, whether that food is coated in pesticides and herbicides, whether your cattle have been living in a highly stressful environment etc. is directly related to you through consumption. Therefore, in order for us to provide our customers with the best, we have to start at the root...literally.
We optimize natures natural processes without manmade additions and inputs with the following methods.
- No till farming - We do not till nor turn our soil in order to preserve and build the natural topsoil layer. Tilling provides short term gains/production but causes erosion and destroys the natural biome. This preserves the intricate and delicate structure in which plants gain nutrients and minerals by trading glucose. By promoting this natural process it allows us to avoid implementing man made chemical fertilizers.
- Diverse plant life - We use a variety of plant life in order to promote healthy biodiversity. This gives us multiple benefits; First we avoid the need for pesticides by creating a random pattern of plant introduction. Predators of a certain crop can only eat what is available that year and the same plant may not be available in the years to come allowing us to avoid building an environment that suits them. Second, the diversity of plants allows our previously mentioned trading structures to grow based on what each plant needs and the size and structure of their roots spreads this trading throughout layers of the soil. Third, these plants store different minerals seasonally and when they die off it allows for the next season to readily use these nutrients promoting fertile top soil. Forth, it allows us to create different canopy layers in the grass to decrease water loss due to evaporation and increase our utilization of the sun for photosynthesis. This combined with the practice of not tilling also allows us to avoid the use of herbicides; our intended plant growth simply out competes them. Fifth and finally, it ensures our cattle are provided the most nutrient dense and diverse food available promoting healthy growth!
- We use our cattle! - Pasture-based farming promotes healthy soil, water conservation, and biodiversity. The rotational grazing systems we use ensures that pastures are not overgrazed, promoting root growth and allowing grasslands to regenerate naturally.
